finally getting around to telling the story two weeks later. yup, that's about the pace of things here lately. so, one month ago i moved in with e and took a week off to unpack and put our home in some semblance of order (still working on that, btw).
***warning: read with caution if squeamish about spoiled food***
i like cereal for breakfast (stay with me here - this is relevant). the morning after the move, i poured myself a bowl and took the milk out of the fridge. it was a few days from expiring but, the carton didn't feel cold to me so, i sniffed it and poured a bit into the sink. change that: i poured chunks into the sink. omg disgusting. i get rid of the nasty stuff and decide to forget about cereal and dairy products for several days. over the course of the week, i complain to e multiple time that the fridge doesn't seem cold enough. he cranks it up a few notches and vacuums all of the hoses and coils. that should do it, right?
fast-forward to saturday. we need a few groceries. e is at work all day and it is too darn hot at home so, i head to wal-mart. in my infinite wisdom, i buy a quart of milk and decide to risk a bowl of cereal the next morning. drove directly home form the store and stored the milk in it's rightful place in the fridge. sunday morning, i woke up looking forward to a bowl of raisin bran crunch. poured the bowl, got the milk out of the fridge. the carton is definitely not cold. i open the carton and pour CHUNKS into the sink. somehow, i resist the urge to be ill.
we are saving for a wedding. any extra funds are going to deposits, vendors, paper goods and all things wedding related. this is not a good time for our appliances to give out. not. at. all. still, weighing the risk of ptomaine poisoning against stretching our budget, safety won. e and i headed out on a quest for a new fridge and a matching stove (they were the same age and it was likely to go soon as well). the results:
- sears seriously disappointed. every time we made a decision on a model we were told it was back ordered, unavailable for two weeks or, did not have a stove that even remotely matched.
- best buy had very few floor models. we weren't comfortable buying something from a photo on their website.
- lowe's won. they had the bottom-freezer model we wanted, a flat-top range in the same brand and color and the ability to deliver both in four days. thank you lowe's!!!
no, i do not actually have this kitchen with cabinets in my very favorite color. but, I do have this rockin' new 22 cubic foot fridge, thankyouverymuch!
and, of course, we can't go anywhere or do anything lately without some type of comedy or drama. we were smart enough to know that applying for a lowe's card would save us an additional 10% off this significant purchase (and, really, who can't use that). so, e fills out the application and we are directed to take it to customer service to process. after waiting in line for about 3 hours behind a couple with some 'issue', we finally move to the front of the line. he hands the application to the cashier and explains that he would like to open a card and that we have an appliance order pending. to which she replies, "you want a credit card? by yourself? can i see i.d. please?" yes, that's right. she thought my fiance was too young to apply - when the age requirement is 18 years of age! he had just shaved that morning but, seriously? we're still getting a laugh from that.
